Entry Requirements
UK passport holders must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival. This can be done online and is typically valid for 30 days.
Best Time to Visit
The west and south coasts are best from December to March, while the east coast shines from May to September. Sri Lanka has two distinct monsoon seasons, so timing matters.
Vaccinations
No mandatory vaccines are required for UK visitors, but it’s advisable to be up to date on tetanus, hepatitis A, and typhoid. Check with a travel clinic for current guidance.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the official currency. Cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but carry cash for local markets, rural areas, and transport.
Language
Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages, but English is widely spoken in hotels, tourist areas, and by guides. Road signs and menus often include English.
Electricity
Sri Lanka uses 230V supply with plug types D, M, and G. UK appliances may work without an adaptor, but it's wise to carry a universal adaptor.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Climb the iconic Lion Rock to discover ancient frescoes, panoramic views, and a fascinating blend of history and legend in the heart of the cultural triangle.
Kandy
Home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth and surrounded by misty hills, Kandy offers spiritual richness, lush botanical gardens, and cultural performances.
Ella
A picturesque hill town with tea plantations, forested trails, and the famous Nine Arches Bridge. It's a favourite for scenic train rides and laid-back charm.
Yala National Park
Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife park is known for leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and birds. Jeep safaris offer thrilling encounters with nature.
Galle Fort
A UNESCO-listed colonial fort town with Dutch architecture, boutique shops, cafes, and seaside walks. It blends history with a relaxed coastal vibe.
East Coast Beaches
Trincomalee and Arugam Bay offer tranquil shores and vibrant marine life. Ideal for snorkelling, whale watching, and surfing away from the tourist crowds.
Transport
Trains are scenic but slow. Private drivers are common for multi-stop tours and provide flexibility. Tuk-tuks are great for short local journeys.
Climate Variations
With multiple weather zones, pack for heat, rain, and cooler hill station climates. Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal, along with a waterproof jacket.
Religious Sites
Modest dress is required at temples. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering sacred areas.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and cafes. Local SIM cards with data are inexpensive and easy to purchase at the airport or in town.
Food & Water
Sri Lankan cuisine is spicy and flavourful. Stick to bottled or filtered water and avoid raw vegetables in remote areas to stay safe.
Respecting Wildlife
Avoid unethical animal attractions. Choose responsible operators for safaris and elephant experiences that prioritise conservation and animal welfare.
Tea Country
Sri Lanka is one of the world’s top tea producers. Visit Nuwara Eliya for scenic plantations and factory tours where you can taste fresh Ceylon tea.
UNESCO Heritage
With eight UNESCO sites, including ancient cities and sacred temples, Sri Lanka’s rich heritage is a key draw for culture lovers and historians.
Island of Festivals
Sri Lanka celebrates colourful festivals year-round, from Vesak lanterns in May to vibrant Perahera parades in Kandy during August.
Surfing Hotspot
Arugam Bay is one of Asia’s best surf breaks. It attracts wave riders from around the world, and the season runs from May to September.
Biodiversity
Despite its size, Sri Lanka is a biodiversity hotspot. It’s one of the best places in Asia to spot leopards, blue whales, and sloth bears.
Warm Hospitality
Locals are known for their kindness and hospitality. Guests are often treated like family, and the country’s friendly energy makes travel feel special.
