Natural Wonders and Nordic Sophistication

Cruise through the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, hike the trails around Trolltunga, or ride the iconic Flåm Railway through valleys and waterfalls. Entry Requirements
UK passport holders can travel to Norway for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date.
Best Time to Visit
For fjords and hiking, visit between May and September. Winter months are ideal for northern lights, skiing, and arctic adventures, particularly from December to March.
Vaccinations
No special vaccinations are required. Routine immunisations such as Tetanus and Hepatitis A should be up to date. Medical facilities are excellent across the country.
Currency
Norway uses the Norwegian Krone (NOK). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, including contactless payments. Cash is rarely necessary, even in rural areas.
Language
Norwegian is the official language, but English is widely spoken and understood, especially in cities, tourist areas, and by younger generations.
Electricity
Norway uses 230V and plug types C and F. A standard European adaptor is needed for UK devices. Charging stations for electric vehicles are also widely available.
Geirangerfjord
This UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjord is known for its deep blue waters, towering cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. Best explored by cruise or kayak during summer.
Oslo
The capital combines modern architecture with green parks and cultural landmarks. Highlights include the Opera House, Vigeland Sculpture Park, and the Munch Museum.
Bergen
This colourful coastal city is the gateway to the fjords. Explore its old wooden buildings, lively fish market, and ride the Fløibanen funicular for panoramic views.
Lofoten Islands
These rugged islands offer dramatic mountains, sandy beaches, and traditional fishing villages. Perfect for photography, outdoor adventures, and northern lights in winter.
Tromsø
Located above the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is a prime spot for viewing the northern lights. The city also hosts festivals, Sami culture, and winter sports activities.
Flåm Railway
One of the world’s most scenic train journeys, the Flåm Railway winds through waterfalls, tunnels, and steep valleys. A must-do for any visitor to western Norway.
Getting Around
Norway’s public transport is efficient and scenic. Trains, buses, ferries, and domestic flights link major cities and rural areas. Renting a car is ideal for exploring remote regions.
Weather & Clothing
Weather can be unpredictable. Pack layers, waterproofs, and sturdy footwear, even in summer. Winters require thermal gear, hats, gloves, and warm boots.
High Costs
Norway is one of Europe’s most expensive countries. Plan and budget accordingly. Choose accommodation with breakfast included and buy snacks from supermarkets to manage costs.
Sustainability
Norway is a leader in green travel. Respect recycling rules, use refillable water bottles, and support eco-certified tour operators and accommodations where possible.
Wildlife Watching
From whale safaris and puffin colonies to reindeer sightings and elk in the forests, Norway offers diverse wildlife experiences across the seasons.
Driving Advice
Norwegians drive on the right. Mountain roads can be steep or icy, so drive cautiously. Tunnels are common, and toll roads can be paid online or via rental car agreements.
Midnight Sun
In summer, areas above the Arctic Circle experience the midnight sun, where the sun doesn’t set for weeks. It’s a surreal and beautiful natural phenomenon.
Northern Lights
From late September to early April, Norway is one of the best places to see the aurora borealis. Clear, dark skies and minimal light pollution enhance visibility.
Fjords & Glaciers
Norway’s west coast is carved by dramatic fjords and dotted with glaciers. Many can be hiked or viewed from boat tours, offering unforgettable natural beauty.
Hygge & Friluftsliv
Norwegians embrace cosiness at home and time outdoors. “Friluftsliv,” or open-air living, is a core part of the culture and encourages nature connection in daily life.
Progressive Society
Norway consistently ranks high in global happiness, equality, and sustainability indexes. The country blends modern innovation with deep respect for nature and tradition.
Tunnels & Bridges
Norway is famous for its infrastructure. It has some of the world’s longest road tunnels and beautifully engineered bridges that connect its mountainous landscape.
