Entry Requirements
UK travellers can enter Namibia for up to 90 days without a visa. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival and have two blank pages.
Best Time to Visit
May to October is the dry season and best time for wildlife viewing, especially in Etosha National Park. Days are sunny and clear with cooler nights.
Vaccinations
Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. A Yellow Fever certificate is required only if arriving from an affected country. Always check current health advice.
Currency
The Namibian Dollar (NAD) is the official currency and is pegged to the South African Rand, which is also accepted. ATMs are available in towns, but carry cash for remote areas.
Language
English is the official language and widely spoken. Afrikaans and German are also common, particularly in the south and central regions of the country.
Electricity
Namibia uses the Type M plug (three round pins). The voltage is 220V. Bring an adaptor and a power bank if travelling to remote areas without guaranteed electricity.
Sossusvlei Dunes
Climb the towering red sand dunes in the Namib Desert and witness unforgettable sunrise views over Dead Vlei’s white clay pan and skeletal trees.
Etosha National Park
One of Africa’s top wildlife destinations, Etosha offers exceptional game viewing around salt pans and waterholes, with a good chance of seeing rhinos, lions, and elephants.
Skeleton Coast
This remote coastal region is known for its shipwrecks, dramatic landscapes, and colonies of Cape fur seals. Fly-in safaris provide stunning aerial views of the coastline.
Swakopmund
A charming seaside town with German colonial architecture, adventure sports, and access to desert activities including sandboarding, quad biking, and scenic flights.
Damaraland
Explore rugged terrain and ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. This region is also home to desert-adapted elephants and the rare black rhino.
Fish River Canyon
Second only to the Grand Canyon in size, this dramatic geological feature offers epic hiking trails and panoramic views, particularly from Hobas viewpoint.
Getting Around
Self-drive holidays are popular due to Namibia’s excellent road network. A 4x4 is recommended for gravel routes, and fuel stops can be far apart in remote regions.
Packing Essentials
Pack layers for warm days and cool nights, sun protection, insect repellent, and binoculars. Bring a refillable water bottle and a good pair of walking shoes.
Local Etiquette
Namibians are friendly and welcoming. Greet people with a smile, ask permission before taking photos of individuals, and support local businesses and craft markets where possible.
Health & Safety
Namibia is generally safe for travellers. Stick to bottled or filtered water, follow basic food safety, and take standard precautions when exploring remote areas alone.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and lodges. Mobile coverage is reliable near towns but can be limited in remote areas. Local SIM cards offer affordable data packages.
Travel Insurance
Be sure to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers off-road driving, medical evacuation, and cancellations due to flight delays or weather disruptions.
Vast Landscapes
Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. Its wide open spaces and diverse terrain make for truly unique road trips and scenic adventures.
Starry Skies
With little light pollution, Namibia offers some of the best stargazing in the world. Many lodges provide telescopes and astronomy guides for evening sky watching.
German Influence
As a former German colony, Namibia still reflects strong European influence in its architecture, food, and signage, especially in cities like Swakopmund and Lüderitz.
Desert-Adapted Wildlife
Wildlife in Namibia has evolved to thrive in harsh desert conditions. Look out for oryx, springbok, brown hyena, and desert lions that survive with minimal water.
Photographer’s Paradise
From the rich colours of the Namib Desert to wildlife in Etosha and the surreal textures of Dead Vlei, Namibia is an inspiring destination for landscape and wildlife photography.
Eco-Conscious Travel
Many Namibian lodges are eco-friendly and support conservation and community initiatives, making it an ideal choice for responsible travellers who want to minimise their impact.
