UK travellers can enter Slovenia for tourism without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and autumn offer mild weather, fewer tourists, and beautiful natural scenery. Summer is perfect for lake holidays and hiking, while winter brings snow and ski season in the Julian Alps.
Vaccinations
No special vaccinations are required for Slovenia. Routine UK immunisations should be up to date. Healthcare is reliable and pharmacies are easy to find in towns and cities.
Currency
Slovenia uses the Euro (EUR). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for remote areas or smaller restaurants and shops.
Language
Slovene is the official language, though English is spoken by many people in tourist-facing roles. German and Italian are also commonly understood near border regions.
Electricity
Slovenia uses 230V power with plug types C and F. A standard European adaptor is needed for UK travellers to charge electronic devices.
Lake Bled
Surrounded by forested mountains, Lake Bled is famous for its church-topped island and medieval clifftop castle. Take a traditional pletna boat and enjoy a slice of Bled cream cake.
Ljubljana
The capital is charming and compact, filled with colourful buildings, bridges, and cafés. Explore the castle, walk along the Ljubljanica River, and enjoy the lively central market.
Triglav National Park
Slovenia’s only national park is a paradise for outdoor lovers. Hike alpine trails, discover glacial lakes, and enjoy panoramic views from Mount Triglav and the surrounding valleys.
Postojna Cave
Take an underground train ride through this vast cave system filled with dramatic stalactites. Nearby, the cliff-side Predjama Castle is built into a rock face and adds to the fairytale atmosphere.
Soca Valley
Known for its turquoise river and scenic gorges, the Soca Valley is ideal for rafting, kayaking, fishing, and hiking. It’s also historically significant from World War I.
Piran
This coastal town on the Adriatic Sea has Venetian architecture, cobbled streets, and stunning sea views. Enjoy fresh seafood and sunsets from the old town walls or Tartini Square.
Transport
Slovenia has a good public transport system, especially for major routes. Renting a car is recommended for flexibility and accessing rural areas or natural sites.
Road Tolls
Driving on motorways requires a vignette (toll sticker), which can be purchased at petrol stations and border crossings. Digital versions are also available online.
Local Etiquette
Slovenians value politeness and punctuality. A handshake is a common greeting. English is spoken widely, but learning a few Slovene words is appreciated.
Weather & Clothing
Pack layers, especially when travelling between mountains and coastal regions. Waterproofs and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for nature activities.
Food & Drink
Try local dishes like štruklji (dumplings), jota (stew), and fresh trout. Wine and craft beer are growing in popularity, and tap water is safe to drink.
Safety & Health
Slovenia is very safe for travellers. Emergency services are reliable, and pharmacies are well stocked. Take standard precautions when hiking or driving in rural areas.
Greenest Capital
Ljubljana was named Europe’s Green Capital in 2016. The city is car-free in its centre and promotes cycling, recycling, and sustainable urban living.
