Entry Requirements
UK travellers do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid at least one day beyond your departure. Proof of onward travel may be requested on arrival.
Best Time to Visit
Dry season is December to April, perfect for beaches and outdoor adventures. Green season runs May to November, offering lush scenery, fewer people, and lower prices.
Vaccinations
No mandatory immunisations are required. Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are recommended. Yellow fever vaccination is only needed if arriving from affected countries. Consult a travel clinic before departure.
Currency
Local currency is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC). US Dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Credit cards are commonly used, though some rural places may prefer cash.
Language
Spanish is the official language. English is spoken in most tourist areas. Learning a few Spanish phrases is helpful and appreciated.
Electricity
Power is 120V using US‑style Type A and B plugs. UK visitors will need a travel adaptor. Electricity is reliable in cities and tourist regions.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Walk among misty treetops on hanging bridges in one of the planet's richest ecosystems. Spot hummingbirds, orchids, and the elusive resplendent quetzal.
Arenal Volcano
This iconic volcano towers above lush forests and hot springs. Nearby La Fortuna offers waterfall hikes, wildlife tours, and relaxing natural thermal pools.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Home to both stunning Pacific beaches and abundant wildlife. Watch for sloths, monkeys, and colorful birds along its easy walking trails.
Tortuguero
Explore jungle canals by boat and witness turtle nesting during the season. This remote area is a haven for wildlife lovers and nature photographers.
Osa Peninsula
One of the planet's most biodiverse regions, home to Corcovado National Park and species like tapirs and scarlet macaws in their natural habitat.
Tamarindo & Nicoya Beaches
Enjoy surfing, sunsets, and laid‑back coastal culture on the Pacific side. Tamarindo buzzes with activity, while nearby beaches offer more solitude.
Getting Around
Use domestic flights, shuttle vans, or hire a car. Roads can be mountain‑wound or unpaved in rural areas, so build in extra travel time.
Packing Tips
Pack for both beach days and rainforest hikes: include waterproof gear, breathable layers, insect repellent, hiking shoes, sunscreen, and a headlamp for remote stays.
Health & Safety
Costa Rica is considered safe with good medical services in cities. Drink bottled water if unsure and be mindful of sun and weather changes in the highlands.
Connectivity
Wi‑Fi is available in hotels and cafés. Mobile signal is strong in towns but may drop in national parks and forested regions.
Local Etiquette
The phrase “Pura Vida” captures the local lifestyle of gratitude, simplicity, and friendliness. Greet people with a smile and dress modestly in villages or sacred sites.
Eco‑Conscious Travel
Many lodges and tour operators follow eco‑friendly practises. Respect wildlife, stay on trails, and avoid single‑use plastics for a lighter footprint.
Wildlife Haven
Despite its small size, the country holds over 5 percent of the world’s biodiversity. Expect to see sloths, monkeys, toucans, and tropical frogs in national parks.
No Army
Costa Rica abolished its military in 1948 and has since focused on education, healthcare, and conservation, earning a peaceful international reputation.
Renewable Energy
Over 98 percent of Costa Rica’s power comes from renewable sources, including hydro, wind, solar, and geothermal—the country is a world leader in clean energy.
Protected Land
More than a quarter of the land is under protection as national parks and reserves. These areas support conservation and sustainable tourism.
Coffee Culture
Costa Rican coffee is world renowned. Tours of family‑run coffee farms include tastings and insight into the growing and roasting process.

This phrase means “pure life” and reflects the national way of slowing down, appreciating nature, and finding joy in simple moments.
