Entry Requirements
UK travellers can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online in advance. Passports must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry.
Best Time to Visit
Rwanda can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the best conditions for gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing.
Vaccinations
Routine vaccinations should be up to date. Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are recommended. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
Currency
The Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the official currency. Credit cards are accepted in some hotels and restaurants, but cash is preferred in rural areas and local markets.
Language
Kinyarwanda is the national language, while English and French are both official. English is widely spoken in Kigali and by those working in tourism.
Electricity
Rwanda uses European-style plugs (Type C and J) with a 230V supply. A universal travel adaptor and a portable power bank are useful for remote lodges.
Volcanoes National Park
Home to the endangered mountain gorilla, this park offers unforgettable guided treks through misty forests to observe gorillas in their natural habitat.
Nyungwe Forest
This vast tropical rainforest is ideal for chimpanzee tracking, birdwatching, and canopy walks across suspended bridges high above the treetops.
Kigali Genocide Memorial
A moving and essential visit, this memorial honours the victims of the 1994 genocide and provides a powerful perspective on Rwanda’s recent history.

Packing Essentials
Bring sturdy walking boots, long trousers, gloves, and a waterproof jacket for gorilla trekking. Also pack sunscreen, insect repellent, and modest clothing for rural visits.
Local Etiquette
Rwandans value politeness and community. Greetings are important, and modest clothing is appreciated in villages and public spaces. Photography should be respectful and not assumed.
Health & Safety
Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa. Tap water should be avoided, and malaria protection is recommended. Medical facilities are good in Kigali but limited elsewhere.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and lodges. SIM cards are inexpensive and provide good coverage in most areas. Mobile money is also widely used.

Comprehensive travel insurance is essential and should include trekking activities, evacuation coverage, and protection for travel disruptions or delays.
