Entry Requirements
UK travellers can obtain a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or apply online in advance. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from arrival.
Best Time to Visit
March to May and October to November are the best months for trekking and sightseeing, offering clear skies and comfortable temperatures in the mountains and valleys.
Vaccinations
Recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus, and diphtheria. Rabies and Japanese encephalitis may be advised depending on your itinerary. Check current guidance before travel.
Currency
The Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the local currency. Cash is widely used, especially in rural areas. ATMs are available in major cities, and credit cards are accepted at higher-end hotels.
Language
Nepali is the official language, but English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and trekking lodges. Local guides are often fluent in both.
Electricity
Power supply is 230V using plug types C, D, and M. Power cuts can occur, so carry a power bank and consider a universal travel adaptor.
Everest Region
Trek through the Khumbu Valley to Everest Base Camp or take a scenic flight for awe-inspiring views of the world’s highest peak and surrounding Himalayan giants.
Kathmandu Valley
Home to historic cities like Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, the valley is rich in temples, courtyards, and UNESCO-listed architecture reflecting centuries of Newari culture.
Pokhara
Relax by Lake Phewa with views of the Annapurna range, explore caves and waterfalls, or use Pokhara as a base for treks and paragliding adventures.
Chitwan National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and top destination for wildlife safaris. Spot rhinos, elephants, and possibly Bengal tigers in the subtropical jungle by jeep or canoe.
Lumbini
Visit the birthplace of the Buddha, a sacred pilgrimage site featuring ancient ruins, monasteries from around the world, and peaceful gardens for reflection.
Annapurna Circuit
One of the world’s most scenic trekking routes, this multi-day hike passes through villages, mountain passes, and dramatic landscapes with unforgettable views.
Altitude Awareness
If trekking above 2,500 metres, allow time to acclimatise and ascend slowly. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and be aware of altitude sickness symptoms.
Permits
Trekking areas often require multiple permits such as TIMS and conservation area passes. These are arranged by your guide or trekking company in most cases.
Road Conditions
Roads in Nepal can be rough and delays are common. Domestic flights may offer quicker alternatives to reach remote regions but are subject to weather conditions.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and guesthouses in cities and along popular trekking routes. SIM cards with data are inexpensive and easy to purchase locally.
Respect for Culture
Dress modestly in temples and rural areas. Always ask before taking photos of people, and follow local customs including removing shoes before entering sacred sites.
Safety & Guides
When trekking, hire a licensed guide for safety and insight. They can help navigate routes, manage logistics, and respond to emergencies if needed.
Mount Everest
Standing at 8,848 metres, Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. Nepal hosts the southern side and offers both trekking and mountaineering experiences.
Living Goddess
In Kathmandu, a young girl known as the Kumari is revered as a living goddess. She occasionally appears in public during religious ceremonies and festivals.
Birthplace of the Buddha
Nepal is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha. Lumbini remains an important spiritual and historical site for Buddhists worldwide.
Adventure Capital
From white-water rafting and bungee jumping to mountain biking and paragliding, Nepal is a hub for adventure travellers seeking adrenaline in stunning natural settings.
Multicultural Society
More than 100 ethnic groups live in Nepal, each with its own traditions, languages, and festivals. This diversity creates a rich tapestry of cultural experiences.
High-Altitude Wildlife
